How Long Do Wax Melts Last? An Honest Guide from a UK Maker

If you’ve just bought your first pack of wax melts or you’re trying to work out whether they’re worth the money compared to candles the first question is usually “how long will these actually last?” Fair question, and one we get asked a lot.

Here’s the short answer, then the useful detail underneath.

The short answer

A single wax melt (one snap of a bar or one cube) typically gives you 8–12 hours of noticeable fragrance across multiple uses in an electric burner. Our own Scrubaadub melts give 12 hours per snap on average but the actual number depends on your burner, the room, and how strong you like the scent.

You don’t have to burn all 8–12 hours in one go. Most people warm a melt for 3–4 hours at a time and get 2–4 sessions out of a single snap before the scent fades.

What actually affects how long a wax melt lasts?

There are five things, and everyone talks about the wrong ones. Here’s what actually matters, in rough order of importance.

1. The quality of the fragrance oil. This is the single biggest factor and the one you can’t see from the outside. A well-made melt uses a generous fragrance load and quality oil that releases slowly. A cheap melt uses less oil, or lower-grade oil that burns off in the first hour. Two melts that look identical can perform completely differently. This is where handmade small-batch melts usually beat mass-produced supermarket ones.

2. Your burner. Electric wax burners hold a steady, moderate heat usually the best for making a melt last. Tealight burners can run hotter than electric ones and burn off the fragrance faster, though they’re still perfectly fine for occasional use. If you want your melts to last longer, an electric burner with a lower wattage bulb (15W or 25W) is your friend.

3. The room. A small enclosed bedroom or bathroom will hold scent much longer than a large open-plan lounge. Ventilation matters too; an open window shortens the perceived scent life dramatically because the fragrance leaves as fast as it releases. This isn’t the melt’s fault; it’s physics.

4. The type of wax. Soy wax and soy blends generally hold fragrance well and release it gradually. Paraffin gives a stronger initial hit but tends to burn off faster. Beeswax and coconut blends fall in between. It matters, but less than the fragrance oil quality.

5. Size and thickness. Bigger, thicker melts have more wax and more fragrance oil, so they last longer. A mini melt (around 5g) might give a few hours; a full snap bar segment (around 10–15g) will give considerably more.

Wax melts vs candles – which lasts longer?

Per pound, wax melts almost always give you more scented hours than candles. There are two reasons:

You control when they’re on. A candle burns while it’s lit whether or not you’re in the room. A wax melt turns off when you switch off the burner the wax hardens and holds the fragrance for next time.

You reuse the wax. One snap of a wax melt typically gives 3–5 warming sessions before the scent fades. A candle is used up when it’s used up.

Candles do have one advantage: the flame itself is part of the experience for a lot of people. If you’re buying purely for atmosphere, a candle wins on ambience. If you’re buying for scent and value, wax melts win.

How to make your wax melts last longer

A few small habits that make a real difference.

Use less than you think. One snap is enough for most rooms. Two snaps is plenty for larger spaces. Piling in four or five doesn’t make the scent stronger for long it just uses your melts up faster and can overwhelm the burner.

Turn the burner off when the scent is strong enough. You don’t need to run a burner for 8 hours to enjoy your melt. Warm it for an hour or two, enjoy the scent, then switch off. The melt is still there for next time.

Store your melts properly. Keep them sealed, in a cool cupboard, out of direct sunlight. Fragrance oils weaken when exposed to heat and light. A good melt stored properly stays scented for 12–24 months easily.

Clean your burner between scents. Old wax mixes with new and dilutes the fragrance. When one melt is spent, let the wax harden, pop it out, wipe the dish, and add a fresh piece.

Don’t overheat. If the melt is bubbling or the scent burns off within the first hour, your burner is running too hot. Try a lower-wattage electric burner, or a smaller tealight.

How do you know a wax melt is finished?

Simple: when it stops smelling. The wax will still look normal same colour, same shape, still melts but the fragrance oils are used up. That’s your cue to bin the old wax (or reuse the cold, unscented wax as fire lighters, which some people do) and pop in a fresh piece.

You’ll usually know you’re near the end because the scent gets fainter each session rather than dropping off suddenly.
